10

We remember things
differently     or in her case often
not at all     Causes slippages
through the years     & between us

Did she read to us?
Yes      she must have
I could read on my own
before we went to school

Was she home at night then?
Now it's my turn to ask
her to fill in my blanks
No      she wasn't     I don't think so

I don't know her stories either
the ones I've overheard her telling
others as I pause in the hall
I think she makes them up

As if in overlapping houses
anchored to the same foundation
each floating     just a few inches away
our fingers never quite touched

Someone flung things into us
at irregular intervals      to eat, to wear,
to sort into piles of similar colors
as a kind of test we never learned to pass

Did we make it out, sister?
How long ago was this?
I'm not sure, sister      either way
The carpet was blue        a long time ago
